Video by @anandavarma | A comb jelly shows off its brilliant iridescence. The colors you see form when light reflects off tiny paddles that the comb jelly uses to propel itself through water. The rainbow colors are only visible when light hits the jellies in just the right way. Despite their name and appearance, these creatures are not related to true jellyfish at all, and may even be the first group of animals to have evolved on the planet over half a billion years ago. Filmed with the help of fellow NG Explorer David Gruber @luminescent_labs.

These images and videos are part of my Invisible Wonders project. I love how photography can reveal the lives of secretive animals, magnify details that are too small to notice, and speed up or slow down processes that are barely perceptible to our naked eye. Capturing these hidden details reminds me there is always more to see when you pay close attention.
